On a fateful day in the spring of 2009, my friend Erica asked a question that changed the trajectory of my life.
I was working in marketing and events for a trade association in Washington, DC and was starting to feel disconnected to my role at the organization and to my life's purpose. With no clear plan of what to do next, I fumbled around in the dark searching for clues. Exhausted and defeated, I was about to give up when Erica asked the question of a lifetime. I will never forget her words, "Folake, you love travel and you love helping people. Why don't you look into a career in international development?" I could feel the clouds parting. After a night of researching opportunities, I knew this was the path for me. And I never looked back.
Since then, I have spent the past decade serving others and seeing the world. From girls' and womens' wellness in East Africa, to monitoring and evaluation in London, to corporate social responsibility in Detroit, I have worked alongside some of the world's most impressive humans on community-led development projects.
Through cultural exchange and humility, my worldview has transformed. I am fortunate to have been surrounded by the wealth and passion of communities working collectively towards a better world.
This spirit of harmony and social change guides my professional endeavors and steers my role as a global citizen.
